The Pursuit of Happiness: WIP's on Wednesday # 5 and 6

Life has been really busy here in Zooty Owl Land - so much so that two weeks have gotten away from me without a single post.

Where to begin??

My little expedition to the wool bazaar  was mentioned in the WIP'S #3 POST - anyway I was overjoyed, thrilled and delighted, etc to discover that they have an online shop!!   Placed a smallish order for some Elle Premier Natural Cotton and a few balls of DK Pullskein (making my favourite niece a groovyghan) - which was delivered to my door in less than 48 hours by a very friendly courier.

Finished the Pinks / Purples Baby Blanket from WIP's #4 commissioned by a friend for her niece's baby shower.     Didn't have time to take a snap - delivery deadline (pun intended - the little lovely put in an appearance before the baby shower!)

Also finally done with the Hexagon Scrapghan - I think it might have taken me longer to weave in the ends than it took to actually crochet it!

Just a bit of silliness - colourful scraps put to good use!

This was intended to be a charity blanket but it rather grew on me -  so I have decided to rather  let it go and live in the Caravan!

I love burning fragrance oil (especially lemon grass!) while crafting and  have quite a collection of burners.    This is one of a set bought on my last trip to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town:

I spent quite a lot of time the past two weeks updating my IPod Music library - 800 and something CD's  and I can never decide what to listen to.    Took only my favourite songs off each CD - about halfway through and have enough music for a week.      This was one of those projects that kept getting re-prioritized (right to the bottom of my to-do list) - really really really happy that this can at least be counted as a Phd (project half done)!

Way back in May a couple of projects were frogged and re-invented.    I was quite happy with the result of my re-inventions.   My daughter has however frogged several re-inventions, add to this the leftover yarn from the groovyghan she made for her friend - and you have quite a motley collection of yarns and colours.   She asked me to design a groovyghan for her using ALL this yarn as well as squares saved from previous froggings -   here is a photo of what it looks like so far::

Groovyghan

It has been unpleasantly cold here in Johannesburg the past few days.    We have been indulging in all sorts of yummy homemade winter warmers - pies, pancakes, bredies (stews), casseroles,  baked puddings with hot custard and Cranberry Crumpets!

Missy is not very happy with the weather - she has spent most of the week in her basket - and she meeeuws until she gets tucked in - cheeky thing!!!

Her Royal Highness

The dry weather is perfect for drying roses though - I have tied them into bunches and have them hanging in the lapa (note the very sad, very dead ivy against the wall)

Aren't they gorgeous?

And finally a quick peek at my WIP's for this week:

Going to blog off now - need to go and tuck HRH in - she is making a lot of  noise because she is being ignored!

Keep warm (if you are in the South);   B cool (if you are in the North);    pursue your Happiness every day;
and craft up a storm!!

WIP's on Wednesday #4

Okay! - so today is not exactly Wednesday - but I have been crazy busy and the week just seemed to get away from me!

I am working with a feast of pinks and purples this week::

Pink/Cerise Baby Blanket;   Pinks / Purples Baby Blanket;    Little Princess Groovyghan

Sooo Girly!!

I completed my hexagon scrapghan (made it a bit smaller than originally intended but decided to rather make it "travel" size).  Still have to work in an endless number of ends (the only thing I do not like about crocheting) before it will be ready for a little photo shoot!

Hexagon wrap / scarf also "finished" - still toying with the idea of adding beaded tassles  - will share the pattern and photo's soon!

Also, as promised, a photo of the fabulous Groovyghan my daughter Dani made for her friend:

I think she did a superb job of it and I totally LOVE the colours - well done Dani!!

Off to raid my bead stash - maybe I find the inspiration I need to finish the hexagon wrap / scarf

Until next time ..... Happy Crafting!

WIP's on Wednesday #3

Sitting here trying to gather my thoughts.    I have a million things to do and am in need of a serious plan of action.

Yesterday I drove to the wool bazaar (a 90km round trip) - a fantastic little shop, but it is in a rather dismal CBD area - so I usually have to psyche myself up for about a week in order to actually make the trip!!     Sooooo glad that I did though - I am now surrounded by lots and lots and lots of lovely yarn - what could be more sublime??

Mine!  Mine!  ALL Mine!!!
As I said - trying to gather my thoughts.   I haven't been all that productive this week -too many other odds and ends demanding attention!

Works in progress this Wednesday:

Hexagon scrapghan - I only add to that when I have little bits of yarn left from my other projects
Groovyghan in blues, teal and neutrals
Set of three cushion covers
Hexagon scarf / wrap
Groovyghan in purples and pinks
Weaving in the ends on the gorgeous pink / orange groovyghan my daughter made for one of her friends (why does mom always end up doing this???)

All those yummy patterns

All those yummy colours
I hope to show you a photo of my daughter's lovely groovyghan as I think that will be finished by tomorrow!

Until then ...... Happy Crafting!!

Banana Tea Loaf

As promised in my block stitch baby blanket post my banana tea loaf recipe.

This banana tea loaf  recipe has been around for as long as I can remember - my gran and my mom used to make it when I was little - and I have been using the same recipe for almost 30 years!

This is the perfect way to use over ripe (even almost mushy) bananas - strangely there always seem to be exactly four to six bananas that are over ripe in our fruit basket - sure there is a conspiracy????

It makes two delightfully moreish loaves (they last about five minutes in our house - none left to photograph!!) - and it is absolutely flop proof!!

I have no idea where the original recipe came from as it was in my gran's and my mom's handwritten recipe books.

BANANA TEA LOAF RECIPE

Ingredients
125ml baking margarine
2 eggs
250ml sugar
500ml flour
10ml baking powder
1ml salt
4 - 6 (over ripe) mashed bananas
5ml vanilla essence

Method
Beat margarine and sugar until creamy.
Add vanilla, add eggs one by one
Beat well after each addition

Sift together dry ingredients - add to egg mix
Add mashed bananas
Beat well.
Pour into 2 greased bread pans.

Bake at 180C for 45 - 50 minutes.

Yummy!

Happy Baking!!

Block Stitch Baby Blanket

The start of another crazy week!

Taking a quick moment to sit and relax.    Baked two banana tea loaves last night - delish (having a slice with a cuppa!).    I will share the recipe with you later today - would like to take some photo's too though there is not much left!! (Edit:    You can find the recipe HERE)

We have had a very mild winter here in Johannesburg with a lot of lovely sunny days.   Friday and Saturday were really rather gloomy though - dull grey skies and relatively cold - we spent most of the time indoors.   I thought winter had finally arrived but we awoke to wonderful sunshine again yesterday and today!

I finished pruning the last of the roses on Tuesday (I don't allow anyone else to touch the Roses - did all the pruning myself so my hands are quite sore! - not to mention my back!)   I am thinking that I might have pruned a bit too early as  I see my favorite Rose Farm  is only starting their pruning today!

Finished up the two baby blankets I have been working on in lovely creams, blues, lilacs and greys:

I used about 75g of each of cream, lilac, light grey and cornflower blue DK and about 100g of baby blue.  Also used about 50g of Elle Marble in the palest blue - unfortunately there was none left for the photo!

I wanted to use a "continuous" pattern for this blanket but it needed to be a bit "MORE" than a giant granny square!      Decided that a Block Stitch Baby Blanket would be perfect!    A very quick and easy pattern - works up very soft too:

Box Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket
4ch, ss to close;  3ch, 2dc, 2ch;   *3dc, 2ch* rep *to* 3x ss to close

Box Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket
Join new colour .  In cnr sps; *1sc 3ch 1sc 3ch* - rep 4x;   ss to join

Block Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket
Join new colour - a row of basic granny clusters into the 3ch sps

Box Stitch Crochet Baby Afghan
And then another row of sc, 3ch - rep alt rows of clusters & sc,3ch

The above photo's were taken of another project (a cushion cover) - but you can see how easy it is to get this going!  Play around with colours for different effects.

I made mine as follows:

Cream centre

Cornflower Blue for the sc, 3ch rows
Alternating single cluster rows of baby blue, light grey, cream lilac
Repeat for 42 rows ending with a baby blue cluster row

Then pale blue Elle Marble for the sc, 3ch rows
Cluster rows in baby blue
Repeat for 11 rows ending with a sc, 3ch row in Elle Marble

Then 1 cluster row in Elle Marble

Then two rows of 1sc; 4ch

I used a "running chain" in lilac to finish it off!

And VOILA!!

Off to do some chores (YAY!) and then I will try to post the banana tea loaf recipe!

Until then ............
