Rainbow Vermicelli Mandala:Pattern

The Rainbow Vermicelli Mandala was designed for a few ladies new to the art of crochet, who wanted to join in the Mandala fun.

The pattern is extremely easy!    No fancy stitchwork and lots of repeats (so it does not require too much concentration)

The design is very simple too - making it perfect for almost any type or colour of yarn

My mandalas did not really need "blocking",  but I did give them a nice puff of steam with the iron (cotton is not quite as well behaved as the acrylics I am used to working with)!

Just kidding of course. This one is as gorgeous as the the others. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely patterns with us.

    1. Oh dear! Some gremlins seem to have crept into the link! I have repaired it now and it seems to be working fine! Otherwise just click on "Older Post" in the right corner (at the very bottom of the page) and it will take you there!

  8. I absolutely love your mandala's. I decided to try this with a #3 crochet thread in many of the colors of the rainbow one that you have posted above. It will have a very different look I'm sure. I wanted to do it in the acylic yarn you used in other mandala's but they are only available in the UK so I decided to use the cotton thread. My question is when you have the rows that are multiple colors like the 3rd, 5th, 8th rows and beyond - do you do one stitch at a time and cut it or carry a color in the back. I've never done something like that so I am not sure how to go about it and your directions seem to address it as one color of yarn. Thanks so much for sharing these beautiful creations with us. 1. Hi Sharon - I rejoin my yarn at the start of each row and break off at the end - I weave in the ends afterwards. The multiple-colour rows are actually variegated (self striping) yarn. Hope I am understanding your question correctly?

    2. Thank you so much. I guess I was going by the colors you had shown by the picture but a variegated yarn makes more sense than each stitch a separate color. I am enjoying your posts so much.

  9. Hello zelna! This is the first of your patterns that I'm trying (and I already have my eye on a few others here on the blog :) ). It looks lovely! Unfortunately it starts to get very wavy around round 11. I counted and recounted, seemed right. So I started anew and again in round 11 it's getting wavy. Has anyone else encountered this issue or maybe I'm misreading the pattern?

    1. The ladies who attend my workshops have all made this pattern using either Raeesah Cotton Soft or Elle Cotton On. The cotton is inclined to do its "own thing" a bit (even if you are blessed with perfect tension) - so that could be the problem, in which case a gentle puff of steam from the iron about 7cm away from your work, and then gently smoothing it out with your hands, should even it out. I found the with a few of the ladies they were very nervous when they started and so their tension was tighter over the first few rows, and then more relaxed once they became more confident - where the tension variation was not severe, we also managed to sort this out with a bit of steam and some gentle persuasion! Give it a try and let me know! (Otherwise you are welcome to attach a few photos on my Zooty Owl Facebook page - so that I can try and see what the problem is)

    2. It's good to know other people made it correctly, if the steam doesn't fix it completely, in the next one I make I'll pay more attention to the tension. Thanks for the quick answer! :)

  10. Can you explain Row 21 to me? What does it have to do with Row 6? I'm quite understanding it.
    Thanks. Maggie

  11. With your permission, I'd like to try and adapt this pattern to a poncho. It would be strictly for personal use. Since I can't write a pattern to save my life I'd be winging it with your pattern. Would this be OK? Thank you.
