Granny Star Pattern

I have always made little embellishments for gift bags and as appliques for blankets or "plain-looking" projects.

Going through my craft room I came across these very quick and easy to make granny stars made last year (takes longer to sew in the tails than it does to make the stars!)

GRANNY STAR PATTERN

TERMS:

My patterns are all written in US TERMS

I have made this little conversion chart to make it easy for my UK readers to also follow the pattern

crochet terms conversion chart

YARN:

Raeesah Cotton Soft DK

(This is a matter of choice - as gauge does not really matter here, you could use anything from cotton floss to t-shirt yarn, depending on how you are going to use your stars)

HOOK SIZE:

4.00mm

(here again use whatever hook you are comfortable with for your choice of yarn)

Foundation:   5ch, sl st into 1st chain to form a circle.

crochet stars

Row 1:  3ch into same place as sl st (counts as 1dc), 2dc into the circle, 3ch;   (3dc into the circle, 3ch) x4;  sl st into the top of 3ch at start to close;   break off yarn.

crochet stars

Row 2:   Join yarn in any 3ch sp;   3ch (counts as 1dc), 2dc, 3ch, 3dc into same place as join;   (3dc, 3ch, 3dc into next 3ch sp) x4;  sl st into the top of 3ch at start to close;   break off yarn.

Row 3:  Join yarn in any 3ch sp;   3ch (counts as 1dc), 2dc, 4ch, 3dc into same place as join; 1sc spike into top of "middle" dc on row 1;  (3dc, 4ch, 3dc into next 3ch sp;   1sc spike into top of "middle dc on row 1) x4;   sl st into the top of 3ch at start to close;   break off yarn.

Row 4:  Join yarn in space to the left of any sc spike; 1ch (counts as 1sc) in same sp as join;  1sc in space between next 2dc;   3sc into 4ch sp;   15ch, sl st into top of last sc; 3sc into 4ch sp;  1sc in space between next 2dc;  (1sc into sp before dc spike;   1 picot; 1sc into sp after dc spike;  1sc in space between next 2dc;   3sc into 4ch sp;   1 picot; 3sc into 4ch sp;  1sc in space between next 2dc) x 4;   1 picot, sl st into 1ch at start to close;   break off yarn

Note:   A picot is formed by crocheting 3ch then sl st into the top of the last sc, in exactly the same way as the 15ch loop is made.     The 15ch loop can be replaced with a 3ch picot if you want to use the star for an applique.

Work in ends

Depending on the yarn used and your tension you may need to block your star (a puff of steam and a gentle flattening with palm is usually sufficient)

So cute!

So colourful!

(And a super fun way to use up those teeny tiny bits of yarn!)

(PS:   This pattern was written and "tested" by me, myself and I - so if you find any little bloopers please do not by shy to point them out!)

Not Quite A Daffodil Square: Pattern

Yesterday I needed to make a quick gift.

So I chose a few soft colours and hooked up a couple of pretty flower squares to make up something fun!

flower crochet squares

This is how they are done (in case you would like to make a few too):

Pattern Terms:  US

Yarn:  Stylecraft Special DK for the squares and flower centres;    Mirage 4ply for the Petals
(The Stylecraft Special DK is quite "thin" compared to our South African DK - it is much closer to our 4ply)

Hook:  3.50mm

Size:  12cm x 12cm

Row 1:  Into the ring,  2ch 2dc cluster, 3ch;   *3dc cluster, 3ch* crochet *to* 5x (6 clusters), ss into top of cluster to close

Notes:
  • a 3dc cluster is formed as follows - yarn over hook, work the first part of the stitch leaving 2 loops on your hook, repeat this twice more (four loops on hook) Yarn over hook and draw through the hooks on the loop to form your cluster
  • The 3ch "loop" between clusters forms your "front loop" into which the petals of your flower will be worked

Row 2:  Into the same space as the ss, 1ch, 1sc, 4ch;  *1sc into top of next cluster, 4ch* *to* 5x (6x four chain loops formed), ss into 1ch at start of row, break off yarn.

Note:   The 4ch "loop" forms your "back loop" into which the first row of your square (row 3) will be worked

I added a row of white in Mirage 4ply (repeat Row 7)

I then added a little bit of detail of the petals:

Just looks like spring (although we are quite deep into Autumn here)!

In a bit of a crazy rush - so this is not much of a post!    Lots and lots of patterns to write and tutorials to do!

Happy hooking!

(PS:   If you would like to make the flowers on their own you can find the link HERE)

(PPS:   Have not had the pattern tested - so please if you find any errors, don't be shy to let me know)

Not Quite a Daffodil: Flower Pattern

Baking Nutella Muffins.

Was a bit bored while waiting for them to come out of the oven and so I made these.    They remind me of daffodils although they are not quite daffodils!

crochet flowers

Have not even worked in the ends yet - just had to type up the pattern first while it was still fresh in my mind:

With Colour A - 6ch, ss to join

Row 1:  Into the ring,  2ch 2dc cluster, 3ch;   *3dc cluster, 3ch* crochet *to* 5x (6 clusters), ss to close,  break off yarn

Note:   a 3dc cluster is formed as follows - yarn over hook, work the first part of the stitch leaving 2 loops on your hook, repeat this twice more (four loops on hook) Yarn over hook and draw through the loops on the hook to form your cluster

Row 2:   Join Colour B in any 3ch sp;   2ch, 2dc, 1tr, 1 picot, 1tr, 2dc, 2ch, ss into same space;  *ss into next 3ch sp,  2ch, 2dc, 1tr, 1 picot, 1tr, 2dc, 2ch, ss into same space* *to* x5, ss into same sp as first petal to close.   Break off yarn

Pattern is written in US terms
I used Elle Pullskein DK and a 4.00mm hook

Made a few more in a thinner yarn and added a bit of detail to the petals.   I think these are much nicer!

Cute on its own:

Or layered and embellished with a button and some tassles:

To make the top layer I used a size 4.00 hook with my DK yarn;   for the bottom layer a size 4.50mm hook with my DK yarn (making it just ever so slightly bigger).

Sew the circle onto the back of the flower.

And there it is -  ready to adorn your favourite scarf or jacket!

(This pattern has not been tested - if you find any errors please drop me a comment!)
